Bullfighting protests spread to Malaga in southern Spain for the first time on Saturday 11th August 2007, as campaigners rallied support to stop the cruel sport.
Protesters dressed in white gathered at La Plaza de la Merced in Malaga on Saturday 11 August at 1700 to march through the City.
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) backed the protests which demonstrate the growth of the anti-bullfighting movement now reaching the area which is at the heart of the sport.
Two of the WSPA’s member societies: the League Against Cruel Sports (UK) and Comité Anti Stierenvechten (Netherlands) sponsored the demonstration organised by CACMA (Colectivo Andaluz Contra el Maltrato Animal), formed in Andalusia in February 2007.
Only months ago the first anti-bullfighting demonstration was held in the capital of the Andalusia region, Seville. There was also an anti-bullfighting demonstration held a few days ago in Bayonne, the heart of French bullfighting.
Leah Garcés, WSPA Director of Programmes, said: “The protests against such a barbaric, cruel spectacle show increasing support across Europe against bullfighting. There is growing political opposition across Europe, demonstrated by the “Written Declaration” on the subject which was signed by over 200 Members of the European Parliament.”
WSPA is opposed to bullfighting and has run a joint ‘Culture Without Cruelty’ campaign in Catalonia with member society ADDA (Asociación Defensa Derechos Animal) since 2004.
