Congratulations and a huge thank you to all the WSPA Kilimanjaro Challenge participants who returned to the UK on the 14th Sept, after the tough six-day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain.
The group of fourteen WSPA supporters set out for Tanzania on the 3rd Sept, after a year of training and fundraising. It was a strenuous and emotional climb, but all agreed it was the experience of a lifetime and great fun.
After the climb was completed, the whole group visited two WSPA-funded projects. The group met a de-snaring team and joined the team looking for snares. Eight snares were found and taken up, saving hundreds of animals from an agonising death.
The climb could not have been completed without the help of the local guides and porters who were a constant source of strength throughout. One WSPA climber became quite ill with altitude sickness and had to be brought down the mountain very quickly by a local guide and the group leader. Thanks to their experience, expertise and quick actions, our WSPA climber recovered well enough to walk down the mountain unaided.
So far, the intrepid group has collectively raised over £46,000 which will be used to fund WSPA’s work with wildlife.
The WSPA challenge team was comprised of: Lisa Busby, Jane Mayhew, Angela Carleton, Tammy Gillian, Steve Gillian, Amy McPherson, Nadine Rendall, Fiona Britten, Gwyneth Humphries, Lesley Illingworth, Emma Janney, Sarah Norris, Emma Furstenheim, Natasha Keogh.
WSPA UK Community Fundraising Manager Jane Rockliffe said: “Well done to everybody who took part – as the WSPA rep on this challenge, I know how tough this was! WSPA would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and to the local crew, Ahsante Tours.”
