A personal message from Steve Leonard, Orangutan Diary co-host

Jun 1, 2009

I’m Steve Leonard, co-presenter of Orangutan Diary, which was recently shown on BBC2. I hope you’ve all enjoyed watching the show and meeting the characters that live at the sanctuary!

My experience of the Nyaru Menteng orangutan sanctuary

Visiting the sanctuary has been one of the most moving experiences I’ve ever had working with wildlife and I wanted to be able to share some of these with you, through some of the photos taken by the BBC film crew and I while filming the series.

This has been the second series of Orangutan Diary. I am so grateful to have had an opportunity to go back and see how the sanctuary has changed in the last two years. Whilst so much has been achieved, there is still much more to do as there are many more orangutans at the sanctuary – over 700 now, with around 17 more coming in every month.

Help give these orangutans a future

I get people coming into the veterinary practice, especially older people without access to the internet and they hand me cheques to pass on to help save the orangutans. I’ve never worked on a programme that had such an emotional impact on an audience.

The situation for orangutans is now critical. Please help WSPA to support the Nyaru Menteng orangutan sanctuary and ensure these beautiful great apes continue to be protected by donating to the appeal.

Anything you can give will make a difference:
• £10 could provide baby milk for ten bottle feeds for an orphaned orangutan
• £25 could give an orangutan medical care, food and shelter for a week
• £50 could help rescue an orangutan in danger
• £130 could provide the orangutans with a careworker for a month

I hope you enjoyed my behind the scenes look at filming the Orangutan Diary series and thank you so much for any support you can give this special cause.
