Andrew Sachs on Market Kitchen for WSPA

Oct 14, 2009

WSPA supporter Louise Green offers some tasty Hound cake to Andrew Sachs' dogs Pepsi and Lizzie

Andrew Sachs, the beloved Fawlty Towers actor who recently played Ramsay Clegg in ITV1’s Coronation Street, is calling on UK pet lovers to help WSPA save stray dogs around the world from a life of cruelty.

Andrew says: "The World Society for the Protection of Animals has been a charity close to my heart for a long time. As a dog owner, the plight of strays is an issue that is enormously important to me.

“WSPA provides education to local people about many issues such as responsible pet ownership, which includes information on vaccination and neutering. As a result, hopefully fewer animals will end up on the street. WSPA also works with local animal welfare groups in the countries that need our help, while thinking about local needs and cultural sensitivities, which is something I really respect.”

About Market Kitchen

Market Kitchen is the UK’s only daily magazine show dedicated to fresh, seasonal food and is hosted by Matt Tebbutt, Tom Parker Bowles, Matthew Fort, Amanda Lamb and Rachel Allen. They champion locally-sourced food and the small businesses and producers that bring it to our table every year.

In tonight’s episode aired (14th October) at 7pm, Andrew invites his dogs Pepsi and Lizzie to test a new ‘Hound Cake’ designed by WSPA supporter and dog trainer Louise Green. You can find Market Kitchen on digital channel UKTV Food, on Sky Channel 249 and Virgin Media Channel 260.

Andrew Sachs, who is currently working on his autobiography, adds: “I had so much fun on Market Kitchen and my dogs absolutely devoured the Hound Cake. It’s not only good for them, they love it eating it too!”

Louise Green’s delicious Hound Cakes!

Louise Green, who runs her own company, Helping Hounds Dog Training and is dedicated to improving canine nutrition comments: “It was great meeting Andrew Sachs! I have been a fan of his for a long time and I am also thrilled that his dogs demolished the hound cake I made for them.”

Louise adds: “The concept of a Pet Party is great, because it’s so simple and fun. All you have to do is bake a Hound Cake or muffins and invite your friends and their dogs round for a cake sale with a difference. The difference being that while our pets in the UK get to eat the treats, the money we raise for the World Society for the Protection of Animals will help to stop animals suffering in countries where, unfortunately people just can’t afford to help stray dogs themselves.”

Putting the ‘fun’ into fundraising

Giving a helping hand to a stray puppy in Kingston, Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Dean.

We want to use our Pet Parties fundraising scheme and healthy Hound Cakes to highlight our responsible pet ownership work around the world.  You can help save people’s pets around the world from pain and suffering by baking cakes here in the UK – you can do it any time of year.

Jane Rockliffe, WSPA Community Fundraising Manager says: “We are so pleased that Andrew Sachs is backing our Pet Party events. We are calling on vets surgeries, schools, community groups and individuals to host their own events. You can throw a Pet Party for your human friends or your dog friends or both! You could hold your party at home or at work, for the general public or friends and family. Just get baking and helping animals around the world really will be a piece of cake.”
