Climb every mountain for the bears

Sep 18, 2009

Twenty intrepid WSPA supporters have just trekked across the stunning Carpathian Mountains of Romania to raise money to save bears from cruel captivity.

The group from all over the UK completed the 50 kilometre trek over five days, reaching heights over 2,000 metres before visiting the WSPA funded bear sanctuary near Brasov.

“It was a tough challenge for many of the trekkers, but they all completed the journey. We are very proud of everyone’s efforts,” said WSPA’s Jane Rockliffe who accompanied the Bear Adventurers.

The trekkers raised thousands of pounds for WSPA and enjoyed a unique opportunity to see the charity’s work when they visited the Romanian Bear Sanctuary on the final day of the Bear Adventure.

“This is what makes it all worthwhile,” said Dawn James. “The trek was really tough but seeing the bears living in freedom and safety was absolutely wonderful.”

Holby City actress Rosie Marcel (who plays Jac Naylor in the BBC One drama) joined the Bear Adventure too, raising funds and awareness for the sanctuary.

Rosie said: “It’s been the most fantastic week and we’ve done some serious walking. Everyone was so dedicated, they put me to shame. It goes to show how many care about all the work WSPA does.”
