WSPA supporters are being urged to tune into Channel 4 and More 4 for a fascinating insight into the pig farming industry across Europe.
On Thursday 29th January on Channel 4 at 9pm watch 'Jamie saves our bacon' where the celebrity chef will follow pig production in the UK from birth to slaughter and onto our supermarket shelves. Jamie also looks at how our food labeling system is leaving customers who want to 'buy British' confused. And, at a time when we're all feeling the pinch, he'll be cooking cheap, but tasty cuts of pork to feed a family on a budget.
He'll be investigating how the greater cost to UK farmers of meeting higher welfare standards has left them open to competition from some mass producers from the EU; who minimise costs, but may have questionable levels of animal welfare compared to British standards. Compassion in World Farming is featured in the programme.
On Tuesday February 3rd, More4 is screening a new documentary 'Pig Business' which examines the truth behind the industrial farming systems in Poland - many of which supply cheap pork to our schools, supermarkets and restaurants.
'Pig Business' says that we can't trust supermarket labels to tell us where our pork has come from or the welfare standards for the pigs. And it includes shocking footage from factory farms and claims of health problems and pollution from factory workers and rural communities.
