On Sunday 26th April Emmerdale actors Dominic Brunt, who plays vet Paddy Kirk and Mark Charnock who plays chef Marlon Dingle in the ITV1 soap, hosted the second annual Zombie Film Festival in Leeds, in aid of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).
Around 200 zombie fans – many of whom dressed up for the occasion – attended the sold out event. Dominic said: “The festival was a huge success and we would like to thank the zombie fans who came along, for their generous contributions on the night and their enthusiasm for all things zombie.”
John Gray, Regional Director UK at WSPA said: “WSPA is very grateful to Dominic and Mark for their support and for organising the Zombie Film Festival; their dedication to raising money for WSPA is fantastic. I hear the zombie fans really enjoyed themselves!”

WSPA Ambassador Dominic Brunt says: “World Society for the Protection of Animals is a charity close to our hearts. I have always loved wildlife, especially bears. A couple of years ago I visited the WSPA-funded Romanian bear sanctuary and witnessed the charity rescuing a bear from an illegal zoo.”
The sanctuary is set in 170 acres of open woodland and has large ponds for the bears to splash and swim, food for foraging and places where the bears can make dens.
Plans for the future of the sanctuary include: more forest enclosures to accommodate the bears, a specialist vet area, a dedicated enclosure to rehabilitate orphaned cubs and an educational visitor centre.
The festival was held at the Cottage Road Cinema in Leeds - one of the oldest in the country, the cinema has been open and continuously showing films since 1912.
The film line up included: Plan 9 from Outer Space, Black Sheep, Living Dead at Manchester Morgue, Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Rec.
At the festival Dominic and Mark gave a short introduction to each film and explained why it was chosen. The movies were both old and new, giving fans of zombie culture a chance to see classics from the past on the big screen for the first time and some more recent contributions to the genre that may have passed them by.
Dominic adds: “To me these movies will always be something to enjoy and laugh at. I will always marvel at a good special effect and mock myself for jumping out of my skin.’
