UK politicians oppose Bill for sustainable livestock farming

Nov 16, 2010

Unfortunately, the debate was dominated by a handful of MPs who were determined to talk it out and the Bill fell short of the 100 yes votes it needed to for Parliament to take it more seriously.

The animal welfare minister, Jim Paice, despite being opposed to the bill recognised that this is an issue of importance and promised to attend a conference next year to address the sustainability of the industry.

Top chefs support for the Bill

Chefs from six of the top ten restaurants in the UK including from Le Manoir aux Quat ‘Saisons in Oxfordshire also pledged support for the law to be changed so that dairy and beef farmers are forced to improve welfare standards and the public are encouraged to eat less meat.

As quoted in today’s Daily Telegraph, Celebrity chef, Raymond Blanc, said good cooks prefer to work with sustainably produced meat. Read the full article here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/8123860/Top-restaurants-call-for-less-and-better-meat.html

Join our campaign for greener farming methods

Despite today’s result, WSPA will continue to support public demand for better farming methods for food production with a high degree of animal welfare.

Join our ‘Not in my Cuppa’ campaign against the threat of intensive dairy farming practice in the UK such as the proposal from Nocton Dairies for an 8,100 industrial farm which would place greater demand for high protein animal feeds.
