Stop the long distance transport of animals

Aug 25, 2011

Imagine travelling in a hot, cramped, filthy cage for days, with little food, water or rest.

This is a daily reality for millions of farm animals, who suffer heat stress, disease and overcrowding when being transported for slaughter across long distances in Europe.

Live animals for slaughter should never be transported for more than 8 hours. As a WSPA supporter, you could help make a difference to animals and help enforce this change.

We need the support of 1 million people to sign up to ask the European Commission to enforce legislation that prevents any farm animal being transported for more than 8 hours.

The current situation

In 2002, the European Commission published a report saying that the transport of farm animals should be as short as possible. Current EU legislation allows live animals to be transported for several days, as long as they are given enough rest, water and food.

The reality is very different, as these transport rules are often not carried out. Millions of sheep, horses, goats and cattle are forced to travel in overcrowded, dirty conditions for days on end, with inadequate food, water or rest – to then be slaughtered at the end of their journey.

This is not acceptable and needs to change – but we can only influence the European Commission with your support.
