Red card to cruelty

Dec 1, 2011

Earlier this year, WSPA was concerned to hear reports that thousands of dogs were being cruelly killed in Ukraine.

Reportedly, several cities were taking this drastic step to ‘clean up’ their streets ahead of the Euro 2012 football championship being co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.

The Ukrainian Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Mykola Zlochevsky has subsequently ordered an end to the cruel practice.

WSPA is urging the Ukraine government to act on the words of its environment minister by ordering the end of cruel dog culls ahead of the Euro 2012 football championship.

We are also calling on the UEFA to use its influence to ensure that football fixtures are never used as an excuse for similar culls in the future.

Humane stray management

Stray dog populations can be humanely and effectively managed by identifying and dealing with the root cause of the problem.

There are methods that WSPA knows works, because we successfully put them into practice in our projects all over the world – most recently in Bali and Bangladesh. These methods could include sterilisation, registration of dogs and promoting responsible pet ownership.

WSPA are world leaders in humane dog population. We are a founding member of the International Companion Animal Management Coalition (ICAM) which has published guidelines on humane dog population management.

We have also worked extensively with organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), the United Nations (UN), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
