Orissa disaster relief operation: update

Disaster drill shows preparation pays
On Saturday 25 September, all the local agencies that would normally be involved in disaster relief operations – the Red Cross, Servicio Nacional de Salud Animal (SENASA, the government agency responsible for the welfare of animals), the police and civil defence – were joined by a WSPA team and a veterinary emergency response unit (VERU) in the drill.
Emergency relief for Bihar’s flood-stricken animals
Nearly 250 animals in Tilaktajpur village have already received treatment and WSPA’s Disaster Assessment and Response Team (DART) will be moving on to Rampur village next, to deliver emergency veterinary relief to stranded animals.
Animal relief reaches Cuba
In additon to our planned animal welfare operation, WSPA vets will assess needs in the Camaguey region of Cuba, hit by Hurricane Paloma earlier this week.
WSPA aid requested by Haitian government
WSPA is leading the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) team, comprised of international animal welfare groups, in preparation for swift deployment following a request for immediate assistance from the government of Haiti.
Myanmar’s parallel disaster
Based on UN and Myanmar government rapid assessment figures, WSPA estimates that as many as 48 million animals may have been wiped out by the cyclone – a figure equivalent to the entire human population of the country.
